Transport routes

Wherever possible, the casks weighing more than 100 tonnes with the reprocessing waste are transported by rail. If there is no railway siding at the starting point or destination, road transporters are also used.

Since no hazardous goods may pass through the Eurotunnel, the casks are brought from England to Germany by ship.

From England:

  • Sellafield to the English port of Barrow-in-Furness by rail
  • Barrow-in-Furness to a German seaport by vessel
  • German seaport to Biblis and Isar by rail and to Brokdorf (no rail connection) by road

From France:

  • La Hague to Valognes by road
  • Valognes to Philippsburg by rail
