Final Disposal of ILW/LLW

In Germany final disposal of radioactive materials has always been the responsibility of the State.

The Konrad mine near Salzgitter, Germany, is currently being transformed into a repository for negligibly heat-generating radioactive waste from Germany. As soon as the waste is packaged appropriately, the waste producers are free to hand over the packages to the state for interim storage until the final repository is available.

In the preparation for final disposal the services of GNS range from development of conditioning methods, including development and qualification of the cask and emplacement systems, processing of the waste and loading of the casks, to documentation of the packages.
