GNS and Gösgen sign a contract for the supply of CASTOR® casks for Switzerland

2017-01-03

Newly developed GNS casks adapted to requirements of the Kernkraftwerk Gösgen-Däniken AG

GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH and Kernkraftwerk Gösgen-Däniken AG have signed a contract for the development and manufacturing of transport and storage casks of the type CASTOR® geo32CH and associated equipment. After the approval process in Switzerland, the casks will be manufactured at the GNS facility in Muelheim/Ruhr and starting in 2027 be delivered to the Swiss nuclear power plant. Depending on the needs of the nuclear power plant, the supply contract comprises up to 51 casks and has an order volume in the three-digit million range.

The CASTOR® geo series is based on the existing CASTOR® family of modular cask systems for spent fuel transport and storage, featuring different cask dimensions and basket designs to adapt to the different installations. Based on well-proven components and state-of-the-art processes this system easily meets the individual requirements of customers worldwide for storage and transport of both PWR- and BWR-fuel assemblies. Owing to different lengths and diameters of the cask cavity CASTOR® geo32CH is able to accommodate 32 fuel assemblies.
